We Need to Talk

What do you mean, I have a “nice speaking voice?”

What exactly is a “nice speaking voice?” I mean I’m eloquent, but so are a lot of other people, and I never hear you tell them they have “nice speaking voices.” I don’t understand your need to comment on my speaking voice, because as far as I can tell, there’s nothing out of the ordinary about it.

You never tell anyone else that they have a nice speaking voice, but all of you have come over here to tell me how well I speak. At first I was flattered, but then I got a little concerned, because usually people don’t tell me I have a nice speaking voice. They just come out and tell me I talk like a white girl. Oh, I know that’s not what you’re trying to say. It can’t be, because that’s one of the most asinine things I have ever heard, and you and I both know you’re far too intelligent to ever let something that stupid come out of your mouth. No, you’d rephrase it, package it so it looks like you’re complimenting me when instead what you’re actually doing is negating my history and my experiences and my body and my voice by telling me I don’t sound like whatever narrow-minded shuckin’ and jivin’ minstrelry you think of when you picture a black person. You’d never do that.

But please, enlighten me, for my inquiring mind would like to know: what do you mean, I have a “nice speaking voice?”
